Book cover: Needlemouth: A Novel by Chang, K-Ming

Needlemouth: A Novel

From the award-winning author ofBestiary, three cousins are forced to complete an impossible and violent task set by a vengeful demon.

Cousins Cindy, Yangyang, and Mandy's hot, tedious summer unfolds in their grandmother's hauntingly familiar house. Mandy, the eldest, seeks connection online and exchanges emails with a stranger. Yangyang, the youngest, retreats into her own imagination in search of meaning. But every morning Cindy wakes with strange objects in her mouth: a button, a berry, a coin.

One night, a starved figure with a mouth the size of a needle-tip appears at Cindy's bedside. She is hunger-afflicted, a demon with no descendants to feed from: she is Needlemouth. Part vampire, part hungry ghost, Needlemouth forces the girls into a grim task to end a man's life.

Cindy, Yangyang, and Mindy are plunged in and out of the demon realm, where they are called to break out of the indifference and numbness of their claustrophobic worlds, and where they are met with the most rageful and resistant parts of themselves. In a quest to satisfy the demon's hunger, they unravel their shared grief and reckon with the cyclical violence that shaped their family. For readers of Akwaeke Emezi and Carmen Maria Machado, K-Ming Chang has crafted a reimagined coming of age novel that asks: what does it mean to become the monster instead of slaying it?

Alexander Maksik, Passengers

7:00 PM • Monday, October 19, 2026Skylight BooksFree

A taut, emotionally gripping, and surprisingly funny novel about a father and daughter stranded in an airport at the end of the world. Ivan is a solitary man in his seventies, set in his ways and haunted by the failures of his past. His smart and cynical daughter, Nina, is in the twilight of her twenties and has long kept a distance from her sentimental father. But when Ivan proposes a trip to Europe in hopes that it will bring them closer together, Nina reluctantly agrees. They meet at LAX, where their departure is delayed. And delayed again. And again. As the hours drag on, their sharp, caustic and wide-ranging conversation reveals a lifetime of misunderstandings, unhealed wounds, and stubborn love. Soon more flights are canceled, security tightens, airport staff grow evasive, and it becomes clear to Ivan and Nina that something is wrong. They begin to suspect that they're being held prisoner--sequestered from the world without explanation. At last, the surreal starts to overtake the mundane, and their need to escape--and to protect each other--turns increasingly urgent. What begins as a piercing portrait of a father and daughter becomes a novel of eerie suspense, as Nina and Ivan navigate not only their fractured bond but also a world teetering on the brink of collapse. A story of loving across gaps--between parent and child, between things said and unsaid--and about what happens when the outside world finally mirrors the chaos within, Passengers is Maksik's most timely and accomplished novel yet.

Ayad Akhatar with Fatima Asghar, - The Radiance

7:00 PM • Thursday, October 22, 2026Barnsdall Gallery TheatrePresented by Skylight Books$41

A NEW YORK TIMES NOVEL EVERYONE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT IN 2026 • A TIME MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2026 “Simply put, a work of genius.” —Abraham Verghese, author of The Covenant of Water A mysterious accident along a country road sparks an awakening and an investigation in Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright and acclaimed novelist Ayad Akhtar’s most daring work yet—a visionary novel of spiritual transformation in an age of fracture—“bordering at times on the ineffable” (Mary Gaitskill, bestselling author of Bad Behavior). When a hit-and-run shatters more than his body, a writer is plunged into a spiritual awakening he can’t tell from madness. In its grip, he’s drawn to a brilliant campus colleague by an uncanny pull, and into a scandal that threatens to destroy them both. What begins as a provocative portrait of academic and cultural warfare deepens into erotic entanglement, the exposure of a family secret, and the mystery surrounding the narrator’s accident—both the violence and its aftermath. Moving between rural America and Europe, Islam and Christianity, the intimate and the metaphysical, The Radiance is of our American moment and beyond it—asking not only what has broken, but what radiance remains.

Ben Ehrenreich with Sesshu Foster - Hold Still

7:00 PM • Monday, October 26, 2026Skylight BooksFree

One of Literary Hub's Most Anticipated Books for 2026 A profound and deeply personal, genre-bending book about finding one's way back to life after the death of a parent. In the months after his mother Barbara's death, Ben Ehrenreich set himself the task of writing a story every day. Leaving open the question of what a "story" might be, he wrote daily entries for three or four months as a way to grapple with his grief and to try to understand this new phase of life, which meant continuing on after his mother's death. Some of these daily entries ended up being short stories of a sort, often fable-like tales involving animals doing surprising things. Others were closer to journal entries, many of them about his daughter, who was nearly three at the time, and who was trying to understand death herself at the same time that she was voraciously exploring the living world. Other entries raised the question: What is it that even makes a story a story? This deeply moving collection of those daily journeys into storytelling--a finely crafted combination of fiction, memoir, and poetic prose--is both profound and satisfyingly whimsical. An innovative, versatile writer, Ben Ehrenreich takes his reader into the difficult emotional terrain of grief, and then safely escorts them to the other side, leaving them inspired, uplifted and hopeful.
