Book cover: Rough Beast by Van Young

Rough Beast

When Percy LeBlanc, the lead singer and guitarist of up-and-coming New Orleans black metal band, Bethlehem, is brutally murdered after a disastrous performance on the last stretch of an even more disastrous tour, their unassuming wallflower of a bass player is arrested. Sammy Singerman is subsequently freed, with only circumstantial evidence to connect him to the crime, but he won't let the unquiet dead rest. Taking on the role of both detective and avenging angel, Sammy goes hell-for-leather to find Percy's killer, plumbing Bethlehem's history of trauma for answers before the killer finds him too.

A provocative subversion of the real-life saga of murder and criminal one-upmanship which plagued Scandinavia's own metal scene in the early 1990s, at once reminiscent of Elizabeth Hand's Cass Neary novels and Grace Krilanovich's The Orange Eats Creeps, Rough Beast is a drug-soaked sewer ride straight into the grimy underbelly of the Big Easy, where nothing is sacred and nothing stays buried.

This book will be available for purchase at the event.

About This Event

Adrian Van Young will be at CHB Lafayette for a moderated Q&A with Gina Hanchey on Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m.!
Adrian and Gina will discuss Rough Beast, which is Adrian’s latest book about Percy LeBlanc, the stormy, Bryonic lead singer and guitarist of New Orleans black metal band, Bethlehem, has been murdered–but his Tumblr account’s still going strong. To gain some insight into Percy’s unique and twisted world, not to mention some clues as to why he was murdered, bass player Sammy Singerman takes on the role of both detective and avenging angel, Sammy goes hell-for-leather to find Percy’s killer, plumbing Bethlehem’s history of trauma for answers before the killer finds him too.

Can you figure out who killed Percy LeBlanc???

Reserve your spot and order your copy through Bon Temps Tix! Rough Beast is available to order as your ticket until 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 22. Copies will be available at the event!

Cavalier House Books - Lafayette

John and Michelle Cavalier acquired Beausoleil Books in the summer of 2024, bringing Cavalier House Books to Lafayette. At this location, CHB has worked to honor the former bookshop's legacy by building on what Beausoleil had begun in 2020. CHB's roots are in Denham Springs, where the business began in 2005 before opening its storefront in 2009. By 2024, the Cavaliers became a part of the Downtown Lafayette community by opening their second location. They have built their Lafayette team with Acadiana at the forefront, with John and Michelle even partnering with the Alliance Française to take French language lessons in order to build relationships with Francophone publishers and increase CHB's French language offerings. Lafayette has offered a warm welcome to the Cavaliers, including further connecting Michelle to her Cajun heritage and bringing her back to the language her grandparents lost. It is their hope to reinvest in the city all that has been granted them!

An Evening with Jessica Alexander

6:00 PM • Monday, October 12, 2026Cavalier House Books - LafayetteFree

CHB Lafayette and UL Lafayette’s English Department along with support from the Levy Humanities Series present Jessica Alexander for a reading and Q&A at 6:00 p.m. on Oct. 12! Jessica will be reading from her solo debut Agnes, We’re Not Murderers. The metafictional tale moves between black and red text, with footnotes, also in red, written by a mysterious author. Partly taking place in Styria, the setting of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic vampire tale, Carmilla, the black text follows Agnes as she is visited by the vampiric Mary, whose arrival heralds the spread of a strange illness. This contagion also extends into the footnotes, written from the United States during the Covid pandemic and offering a reflection on illness, grief, and queer life. Seats are limited so please secure your ticket for the event through Bon Temps Tix – general admission is free and available until the start of the event (or sell out)! You can also order your copy of Agnes, We’re Not Murderers by 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 11. Books will be available at the event! We can’t wait to spend this evening with you and Jessica!
