For eight-year-old Tim, this occurred when both of his parents, immigrants from Ireland, perished. Separated from his siblings, friends and the only world he knows, Tim becomes a resident of an orphanage northwest of Chicago. Tim executes a harrowing escape and returns to live on the rough and tumble streets of Chicago. He encounters the red-light district, tuberculosis, smallpox, the Spanish flu and the mob in a notorious time in Chicago history which includes the Iroquois Theatre fire, the Eastland Disaster, and more. Using his smarts and will to survive, Tim’s unceasing desire to again experience love of family keeps him alive through extraordinarily challenging events.

Author Event - Noel Massie - Congrats! You've Been Promoted - The Book Loft Oak Park
Join us at The Book Loft on Saturday, September 26th at 2pm! Author and advocate Noel Massie will be discussing his book Congrats! You've Been Promoted: An Essential Guide for Helping New Leaders and Their Teams Succeed, with a book-signing to follow. Copies of Congrats! You've Been Promoted will be available for purchase at The Book Loft! "Getting promoted is one of the most exciting events in a career. Yet many are placed in the role without any knowledge of what it takes to be a leader, let alone a great leader. You're expected to sink or swim, and most companies don't provide any support or leadership training either before or after the promotion. You want to be an excellent leader for your team, but where can you find the basic tools and strategies you need? Author Noel Massie, former vice president of operations for UPS, has walked in your shoes. And he knows what it takes to lead with both wisdom and confidence. Congrats! You've Been Promoted is the trusty, must-have guide for every new leader. It's a mentor on your bookshelf! With professional and personal anecdotes, pertinent research, and exercises that help reinforce the concepts, Massie uses his signature straightforward style to impart the leadership lessons he learned during his six-decade career, such as: - Understanding your team's terms and conditions, and your own - Establishing trust with your team - Providing regular, actionable feedback - Leveraging the B.E.S.T. Principle to keep discussions with employees focused and positive - Applying the 4x5 Method to capture multiple perspectives on any situation . . . and many more. Give yourself the gift of starting off your leadership journey on the right foot. Your success--and that of your team--depend on it!" Noel Massie began working for UPS part time during college and rose through the ranks to become vice president for UPS's US Delivery Operations. Before his retirement in 2019, he oversaw 200,000 employees who were led by 12,000 supervisors. In this role, Noel supported and guided the package delivery and logistic services in the United States. He continues to mentor young leaders and supervisors. Noel is currently a member of numerous boards: the Annenberg Foundation, which holds a $1.7 billion endowment and where Noel serves on their investment committee that guides the foundation's investment strategy; the Los Angeles Urban Leagues Executive Committee, where Noel served as chairman for nine years; Chapter ONE US, an organization that seeks to enhance elementary school literacy; and the Asian American and Pacific Islander Legal Center. He has received over a dozen awards, including the Peter Drucker School of Management Leadership Award, the Whitney M. Young Award, the Admiral Samuel L. Gravely Award, the Civic Leadership Award of Los Angeles, and the Civic Leadership Award of Chicago for serving for five years on the Chicago Workforce Board. He currently mentors young leaders and private organizations on values-based leadership principles. He and his family reside in Oak Park, Illinois, with a secondary residence in Southern California. - https://noelmassie.com/
