April is Second Chance Month - a time to raise awareness about the challenges people face after incarceration and to celebrate the life-changing power of opportunity. More than 36,000 women are released from Illinois prisons each year, with many more waiting in jail to resume their lives and reunite with family. Women with a history or risk of incarceration, given a second chance, change their lives for the better – given the opportunity to stay safe, plan a better future, and contribute to their communities. This month holds special meaning for us at WIND as we work year round to provide the support and programs that justice-impacted women need to rebuild their lives and thrive. That is WIND’s mission. Thanks to Mary and Madison Street Books, you will hear the voices of WIND’s amazing Lived Experience Leaders as they share their thoughts, feelings, recollections and dreams through their voices and verse. They write not only for their own healing but to inspire and encourage others to make their journey to success.
