ABOUT The Girl Who Became King From award-winning chef, author, television personality, and activist Melissa King comes an intimate, captivating memoir about family, food, and finding her voice as a queer Chinese American chef. Growing up, Melissa King lived for the moment she would come home from school, grab her prized meat cleaver, and call her mom at work for instructions on how to prepare dinner for her family. She already knew cooking was her future, but she didn’t know just how much she’d have to fight to make that dream a reality. Caught between two cultures growing up, King felt like she was stuck in a box that was only getting smaller. Her Shanghainese and Cantonese heritage meant that her immigrant parents had certain expectations—none of which included going to culinary school or falling in love with women. American culture also dictated that restaurant kitchens were a man’s world. But trying to live by these rules felt like no life at all. So King broke the mold, ending up in some of the most exciting fine dining kitchens in San Francisco and finding a home in its queer community. But after relentlessly working her way up from arranging cold appetizers to manning the meat station, and embracing her multilayered identity, she began to feel the culture she all but left behind begin to pull at her. When she entered Top Chef as a reluctant contestant, inspired by her grandmother’s advice to follow her heart, her signature flavors—seasonal dishes melding California and Chinese cuisines—awakened and flourished as she looked to her heritage and hometown for inspiration. And being in the public eye connected her with her parents in a new way, allowing them to come to a loving mutual understanding of each other's strengths and flaws. In this heartfelt memoir, King shows that empowerment comes from embracing all the different ingredients that make up who she is, and believing in herself against the odds. BIOS Melissa King is a James Beard Award-winning chef, author, and television personality. She is the author of the cookbook Cook Like a King: Recipes from My California Chinese Kitchen, which won the 2026 James Beard Award. She is the winner and fan favorite of Bravo’s Top Chef: All Stars L.A. and holds the record for the most challenge wins in the show’s history. Known for her modern California Chinese cuisine, she is a leading voice shaping conversations through food, cultural storytelling, and advocacy. A queer Shanghainese Cantonese American, she grew up in Los Angeles’s San Gabriel Valley. Her work has since taken her beyond the kitchen into television, fashion, and culture, including hosting Tasting Wild for National Geographic, curating the 2022 Met Gala menu, and being featured in global campaigns for Levi’s and GAP. She lives in San Francisco. Dan Souza is the Chief Content Officer at America’s Test Kitchen and the creator and host of Netflix’s I Changed My Mind with Dan Souza, where he explores the stories, ideas, and “aha” moments that can change the way we see food—and life. A longtime member of the America’s Test Kitchen family, Dan is the former Editor in Chief of Cook’s Illustrated, a cast member of the Emmy Award–winning America’s Test Kitchen television show, and the creator and host of the popular web series What’s Eating Dan? Kevin Galvin at Harvard Book Store

7:00 PM • Thursday, October 8, 2026Harvard Book StoreFree

Harvard Book Store welcomes Kevin Galvin—former deputy national editor of The Boston Globe and correspondent for the Associated Press and The Seattle Times—for a discussion of his new book, Troubled Times: The Boston Courthouse Bombing of 1976. He will be joined in conversation by Mitchell Zuckoff—Sumner M. Redstone Professor in Narrative Studies at Boston University and author of nine books, including the #1 New York Times bestseller 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi, which was adapted into the Michael Bay/Paramount Pictures movie of the same name. ABOUT Troubled Times Interweaves the stories of a revolutionary and a bombing victim to explore the roots and unintended consequences of political violence. 1976. The Vietnam War had ended, but radical political groups still operated clandestinely throughout the United States. Nowhere was the threat of civil unrest greater than in Boston. Racial tensions had been building since a federal judge ordered the desegregation of the Boston Public Schools, and civic leaders were counting on the pageantry of the nation’s Bicentennial to boost both tourism and investment. In April, the Sam Melville-Jonathan Jackson Unit, prison reformers schooled in Marxism and angered by US interventions abroad, bombed the Suffolk County Courthouse, injuring twenty-two people. The site of the blast marked the spot where the lives of two men intersected: a mill town kid who’d been radicalized in Vietnam and prison, and an immigrant waiting in line because he needed to renew a cab license. Fifty years after the bombing shook the city, Troubled Times tells the story of lives changed by political violence at a time when the American experiment is again in crisis. BIO Kevin Galvin has been a correspondent for the Associated Press, where he covered everything from the Shining Path insurgency in Peru to the Clinton White House; and The Seattle Times, where he was a feature writer based in the nation’s capital. He was deputy national editor of The Boston Globe, and he has held leadership positions at Harvard and Arizona State University. Mitchell Zuckoff is a bestselling author and the Sumner M. Redstone Professor in Narrative Studies at Boston University. His nine books include the #1 1 New York Times bestseller 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi, which was adapted into the Michael Bay/Paramount Pictures movie of the same name. His book Lost in Shangri-La received the Winship/PEN Award for Nonfiction. He is currently writing a book under contract to HarperCollins about the shootdown of the fighter jet Dude 44 during the Iran war. As a member of the Boston Globe Spotlight Team, Zuckoff was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting. His honors include the Distinguished Writing Award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors; the Livingston Award for International Reporting; and the Heywood Broun Award. He has written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times, and numerous other publications. Unable to attend a Harvard Book Store author event? Ticket holders should enter the church at the front entrance located at 1446 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA. If you need elevator access, enter at the red door located at 1 Church Street, Cambridge and ring the bell. TICKETING There are two ticket options for this event. Admission-Only Tickets: Includes admission for one. Note: Books bundled with tickets may only be picked up at the venue the night of the event, and cannot be picked up in-store beforehand. This offer expires after 30 days. Please note we cannot guarantee signed copies will be available to ticket holders who do not attend the event. About The Rush National Book Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist Nathaniel Philbrick, author of In the Heart of the Sea and Mayflower, reveals how California’s Gold Rush forged the modern United States—and lit the long fuse to civil war. In January 1848, a carpenter spotted flecks of gold in a shallow stream at Sutter’s Mill in California, triggering the greatest voluntary migration in U.S. history, as hundreds of thousands raced west in pursuit of sudden wealth, reinvention, and power. From the feverish gold-mining camps of the Sierra Nevada mountains to the wharves and vigilance committees of San Francisco, Nathaniel Philbrick renders a combustible, all-world society: Chilean brothers reinventing themselves to outrun prejudice; Native communities navigating dispossession and violence; the merchant-showman Samuel Brannan, drawn into the center of early vigilantism; and the politicians vying for control of California’s future—the ambitious Free-Soil political boss David Broderick, who squared off against William Gwin, the Southern power broker intent on tilting the state toward slavery and the Confederacy. In The Rush, Nathaniel Philbrick transforms the Gold Rush from a tale of sudden riches into the origin story of America’s modern contradictions—capital consolidated at dizzying speed, democracy in thrall to private power, xenophobia weaponized in the name of liberty—and a stubborn belief in the American experiment that refuses to die. This is the story of a nation tearing at the seams and a republic tested by its own ideals. Not until a year after the outbreak of the Civil War, when President Lincoln signed legislation that would unite the nation east to west by building a transcontinental railroad, was California’s loyalty secured. Philbrick follows the gold as it moves from riverbed to countinghouse to the halls of power, revealing how vigilantism hardened into law and how debates over slavery in the West tipped the balance in Washington. The result is a clear, human story of how a scramble for wealth reshaped ideas of freedom, labor, and belonging—and how California's rise helped push a fractured nation toward war. The Rush is alive with characters whose choices still reverberate: a searing, panoramic epic that captures both the fury and the promise of America. BIOS Nathaniel Philbrick is the author of In the Heart of the Sea, winner of the National Book Award; Mayflower, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize; Valiant Ambition, winner of the George Washington Prize; Bunker Hill, winner of the New England Book Award; Travels with George; Away Off Shore; Second Wind; Sea of Glory; and The Last Stand. Ilyon Woo is the Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom—an instant New York Times best-seller, one of the New York Times “Ten Best Books of the Year,” a People Magazine “Top 10 Book of the Year,” and Kirkus Prize finalist. She is also the author of The Great Divorce: A Nineteenth-Century Mother’s Extraordinary Fight Against Her Husband, the Shakers, and Her Times. Unable to attend a Harvard Book Store author event? Nghi Vo & Cassandra Khaw at Harvard Book Store

7:00 PM • Tuesday, October 6, 2026Harvard Book StoreFree

Harvard Book Store welcomes Nghi Vo—USA Today bestselling author of Siren Queen, The Chosen and the Beautiful, Don't Sleep with the Dead, and The City in Glass—and Cassandra Khaw—bestselling and Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Library at Hellebore—for a discussion of their new novels, The Scarlet Ball (Vo) and Find Me Where It Ends (Khaw). About The Scarlet Ball From USA Today bestselling author Nghi Vo, this all-consuming tale of ballrooms and bloodshed weds The Gilded Age with the Gothic vision of Guillermo del Toro. Pick a face, pick a fate. Judith Ban, former convent girl, courtesan, and failed thief, is on the lookout for her next identity. The daughter of a Vietnamese adventuress and a French naval officer, she’s no stranger to risk, but she’s unprepared for the secrets of New York’s legendary Four Hundred, or for the women who build their power at the city’s heart through blood-soaked, gold-etched rituals of demonic marriage. In exchange for enough wealth to outrun her past, Judith strikes a deal with the matriarch of the powerful Howard family: she will stand in for the missing Howard granddaughter, who was poised to make her debut when she disappeared. With Miss Iphigenia Marshall’s face stitched over her own, Judith is white, rich, and about to risk body and soul in the deadly games that determine which girls will find a match—and which will be devoured. If she can keep her wits and her life, her reward will be a husband with undreamt-of power who will be hers to command... so long as she can keep his infinite hungers fed. But to survive the season, Judith will have to seduce a storm in the shape of a man, before the night to which everything has been leading—the Scarlet Ball where the demons choose their brides. A razor-sharp subversion of romance tropes and nightmare of manners, Vo's fusion of history and fantasy does for Edith Wharton what her acclaimed debut The Chosen and the Beautiful did for F. Scott Fitzgerald. About Find Me Where It Ends A woman wakes up to find the black hound of Death at her front door in this hauntingly beautiful tale from USA Today bestselling author Cassandra Khaw. Antigone is no stranger to death. For the women of her family, death always comes in the form of a black dog. When Antigone’s own black dog arrives, she isn’t afraid. She invites it inside, where it soon becomes a daily source of companionship and comfort. It also forces her to reflect on the life she’s led—the parts of herself she’s hollowed out for the sake of others, and the bone-deep exhaustion that’s hounded her every step. Her Death’s arrival must be a sign, permission to finally let go. To rest. Because while mortality is inevitable, living is a choice. But a good death comes at a price. Bios Nghi Vo is the USA Today bestselling author of Siren Queen, The Chosen and the Beautiful, Don't Sleep with the Dead, and The City in Glass, as well as the acclaimed novellas of the Singing Hills Cycle, which began with The Empress of Salt and Fortune. Her work has been nominated for the Nebula, Locus, and Lambda Literary Awards and the LA Times and Ursula K. Le Guin Prizes, and has won the Crawford, Ignyte, and Hugo Awards. Born in Illinois, she now lives on the shores of Lake Michigan. She believes in the ritual of lipstick, the power of stories, and the right to change your mind. Cassandra Khaw is the USA Today bestselling and Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Library at Hellebore, Nothing But Blackened Teeth, The Salt Grows Heavy, Breakable Things, and coauthor of The Dead Take the A Train with Richard Kadrey. They are an award-winning game writer. Unable to attend a Harvard Book Store author event? You can still pre-order a signed book by one of our visiting authors. Jasper Fforde at Harvard Book Store

7:00 PM • Monday, October 5, 2026Harvard Book StoreFree

Harvard Book Store welcomes Jasper Fforde—author of fifteen novels, including the New York Times bestseller The Eyre Affair, the first book in his Thursday Next series—for a discussion of the eighth and final installment in the Thursday Next series, Dark Reading Matter: The Last Thursday Next Novel. About Dark Reading Matter Will literary Special Ops agent Thursday Next find her happy ending? The outrageous, heartfelt conclusion to the New York Times bestselling series, which began with The Eyre Affair, will have you, Dear Reader, laughing out loud. Ex-Literary Special Ops agent Thursday Next is embarking on her eighth and final fictional adventure, and she is well aware of the fact. The problem is, others are aware of it, too. Old foes and new are plotting a terrible revenge: to disrupt the narrative and make the last Thursday Next novel, Dark Reading Matter, not just unreadable but unpublishable. Thursday can’t let that happen, and needs to use all her guile and narrative trickery to unmask the antagonists. It won’t be easy. The Martians have broken out of their H. G. Wells novel and threaten both the real world and the BookWorld. Agents from a higher reality want unfettered access to the Dark Reading Matter, the realm where deleted books and unrealized literary ideas end up. A Gateway to Hell has opened up at Wantage’s Shakesmania, the nation’s second-worst Shakespeare theme park, and the cozy world of Enid Blyton has been hijacked by ultra-right-wing nationalists. With Reality Field Distortion experiments going haywire, a partially redacted donkey, a BookWorld on the brink of losing its imaginative energy to Big Tech and a murderous stamp collector with Philaticide on their mind, Thursday has to navigate a tightrope of borderline unusable narrative devices to bring the series to a satisfying conclusion. It’s a tall order, but Thursday has several secret weapons: her own adaptability; her husband, Landen; a host of stalwart friends and ultimately the most loyal compatriots she can call upon—her readers. Bio Jasper Fforde spent twenty years in the film business before debuting on the New York Times bestseller list with The Eyre Affair in 2001. Since then he has written another fifteen novels, including The Big Over Easy, The Constant Rabbit, Shades of Grey, and Red Side Story. Fforde lives and works in his adopted nation of Wales. Harvard Book Store and The French Library welcome Leila Slimani—bestselling and Prix Goncourt-winning author of The Perfect Nanny—for a discussion of her new novel, I'll Take the Fire. She will be joined in conversation by Mylène Priam—scholar and writer who taught French and Francophone literature at Harvard University for more than a decade. Praise for I'll Take the Fire “For the half week I spent in its pages, this book set fire to my days. Propulsive and fearless, Leila Slimani’s novel renders coming of age—social, sexual, artistic—with uncommon command and passion. Slimani’s courage, her vulnerability, her virtuosity left me inspired. I won’t be surprised if this book finds readers for generations to come.” —Ayad Akhtar, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Homeland Elegies and The Radiance “This beautiful novel tells us the story of a battle fought by an Arab girl to discover herself and liberate herself from tradition. Leila Slimani has succeeded in creating a wonderful world that we will never forget, and that will always inspire us.” —Alaa Al Aswany, author of The Yacoubian Building “Leila Slimani is one of our best writers, a master stylist and an exquisite storyteller. I read anything she writes.” —Rabih Alameddine, National Book Award–winning author of The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and His Mother) Co-Sponsor French Library / Alliance Française The French Library is a non-profit U.S. organization that provides the general public with affordable access to language and cultural education programs.
